Arriving in a distant time zone leaves most travellers functional but wrong for a couple of days. The body clock does not follow the aircraft, and it resets at a fixed pace regardless of intention.
The internal clock runs on its own schedule
Human physiology runs on a roughly daily cycle governing sleep, alertness, digestion and body temperature. That cycle is generated internally and merely corrected by external cues.
Correction happens gradually. The clock shifts by a limited amount each day, so a large jump takes several days to close regardless of how tired the traveller feels.
This is why sleeping heavily on arrival does not fix the problem. Sleep debt and clock misalignment are separate things, and only one of them responds to a long night.
Light is the dominant signal
The strongest cue for resetting the clock is light reaching the eyes, and its timing matters more than its brightness. Light in the local morning advances the clock, while light in the local evening delays it.
Getting the timing wrong actively works against adjustment. Bright light at the wrong end of the day pushes the clock in the direction opposite to the one required.
Daylight outdoors is far stronger than indoor lighting. An hour outside does more than a full day in a hotel with the curtains open.
Direction of travel changes the difficulty
Travelling east requires the clock to advance, which means going to sleep earlier than the body wants. Travelling west requires a delay, which means staying up later.
Delaying is easier than advancing because the natural cycle runs slightly longer than a day. Westward trips generally settle faster for the same number of zones crossed.
Distance alone is a poor predictor. A long north-south flight crosses few zones and produces fatigue without the clock problem at all.
Meals and activity act as weaker cues
Eating on local time gives the digestive system a consistent signal, and it does contribute to alignment. It is a secondary cue rather than a substitute for light timing.
Physical activity at the right time of day supports the shift as well. A walk outside in the local morning combines two useful signals at once.
Caffeine and alcohol both interfere with sleep architecture. They can make the first night worse without moving the clock in either direction.
Planning the itinerary around it
The practical response is to schedule the trip rather than to fight the biology. The first day after a long eastward flight is a poor place for anything that demands sharp judgement.
Short trips of two or three days may not be worth adjusting for at all. Staying close to home time can leave a traveller more functional than a half-completed shift.
For longer stays, starting the shift a day or two before departure reduces the gap on arrival. Moving bedtime by an hour is easier at home than in an unfamiliar room.
