Alright here we go again lol. Plan the perfect road trip… man if only it was as easy as it sounds right? I’m typing this from my couch in Denver right now, it’s like mid-March 2026 already?? Time flies, there’s still patches of snow outside my window melting into gross slush puddles and my dog’s shedding everywhere. Anyway my first real road trip attempt was summer before last and yeah it taught me a lot. Mostly that I’m bad at planning at first haha.

I thought I’d just hop in my old Subaru Forester and drive west to like Utah or Arizona for some canyons and stuff. Sounded dope. Ended up with a dead phone, wrong turns that added like 80 miles, and eating gas station hot dogs that were… questionable.

Why My First Try at Planning a Road Trip Was Kinda Embarrassing

Straight up I “planned” by googling “cool places west” at 11 pm the night before I left. Bad move. I packed three hoodies (it was July??), forgot sunscreen, and thought I’d wing lodging. Spoiler: campgrounds book up fast in summer. I slept in my car one night outside Moab because everything was full. Back hurt for days.

If you’re new to this whole how to plan the perfect road trip thing start smaller than I did. Maybe a weekend loop or 3-4 days max. Like drive from Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park then loop back via Estes Park or something. Low pressure when you mess up.

Picking a Route That Doesn’t Suck (Lesson Learned Hard)

Don’t just follow Google Maps blindly. I did and it tried sending me down this sketchy forest service road that was basically gravel and mud after rain. Almost got stuck. Use Roadtrippers or Furkot for better ideas they let you drag stops around.

Here’s a decent one I bookmark now: check out some Southwest routes or Yellowstone stuff for inspo. Like this Yellowstone to Grand Teton itinerary looks solid if you’re into that area.

See that? That’s the kinda view you want to actually stop for instead of stressing about where you’re sleeping that night.

Also check weather apps and state DOT sites obsessively. I ignored a storm warning once and drove through hail. Not fun.

Budgeting – Because I Blew Through Mine Fast

Gas was like $4.50 a gallon last time I did this (feels higher now tbh). Food lodging random park fees… it sneaks up. I thought $600 would cover a week. Spent almost double because I ate out every meal and paid for last-minute Airbnbs.

Pro tips:

  • GasBuddy for cheapest pumps
  • Pack a cooler (more on that below)
  • Use apps like HotelTonight or camp in national forests if allowed (dispersed camping saved me once)
  • Set a daily spend limit and track it in notes app or whatever

Packing – Don’t Pack Like an Idiot Like I Did

I brought way too many clothes and not enough useful stuff. Forgot a headlamp, extension cord for charging multiple things, even basic ibuprofen. Headache city.

What actually works:

  • Cooler with ice packs – sodas stay cold food doesn’t rot
  • Phone mount (mine kept falling) + extra cables
  • Trash bags and baby wipes (crumbs + spills = nightmare)
  • Jumper cables small toolkit spare tire checked
  • Layers – mornings cold afternoons hot out west
  • Snacks that don’t melt or crumble everywhere

Leave space for junk you buy like magnets or dumb t-shirts haha.

This is more organized than mine ever was but you get the idea—trunk chaos is real.

Snacks & Food – The Real MVP

I lived on beef jerky and Red Bull for like two days straight. Bad idea stomach hated me. Better:

  • Nuts trail mix apples (they last)
  • String cheese yogurt tubes
  • Chips pretzels but in ziplocks cause crumbs
  • Chocolate bars that won’t turn to soup

And water lots of water. Refill at gas stations.

Not my car but close enough to the mess I had going.

Itinerary – Loose Rules Only

I tried zero plan = freedom. Freedom = exhaustion. Make a rough daily thing: drive 4-6 hours hit one main spot book a place ahead if possible. Build flex time for “wow this view is insane let’s stay.”

Apps like Recreation.gov for campsites or campspot. And yeah national park pass if you’re doing multiple.
