Collage of Five Beaches
Collage of Five Beaches

Alright so hidden beach gems, yeah that’s what this whole thing is about. I mean I’m literally typing this from my couch in [some US city, let’s say Seattle area for vibes], rain tapping the window like it does half the year here, and I’m daydreaming about sand instead of dealing with emails. Humans aren’t perfect at this stuff—hell I’m not. I forget sunscreen, take wrong turns, post dumb selfies that look terrible later. But that’s kinda why these spots hit different. No one’s curating perfection; it’s just… there.

I got obsessed after one too many packed California days where you can’t even hear the waves over kids screaming and music blasting. Switched to hunting hidden beach gems and never looked back. Sometimes I drive hours, hike in the wrong shoes, get bitten by something, but then—empty sand. Worth the chaos. Anyway here’s my messy list of five that stuck with me. No sugarcoating.

Why Hidden Beach Gems Feel Like a Secret Win Lately

Crowds stress me out more than they used to. Maybe it’s getting older or whatever but I just want quiet. These hidden beach gems give you that without feeling fake-exclusive. You earn it with a little sweat and swearing at your map app. I once hiked the wrong trail for like 45 minutes before realizing—classic idiot move—but the payoff when you finally spot the water? Unreal. Sensory overload in the best way: salt air, crashing waves, no one asking for your Spotify.

It’s not all romantic though. Bugs. Wind. Sand everywhere forever. But I keep going back. Flawed human here.

1. Pfeiffer Beach – Big Sur, California (Still My Top Hidden Beach Gem)

Pfeiffer Beach has that purple-ish sand from some mineral thing—looks edited but it’s real. You pay to park, drive this narrow one-lane road that feels sketch as hell, trees scraping the car. Last time I went I stubbed my toe immediately on a rock, yelled “ow shit” loud enough birds flew off, then just sat there cracking up because what else you gonna do.

The keyhole arch is insane at sunset, waves punching through like nature’s showing off. I brought snacks, dropped half in the sand (again, me), ate the rest anyway. Low tide for tide pools—wear real shoes next time dummy. I learned that the hard way.

2. Shi Shi Beach – Olympic National Park, Washington (Rugged Hidden Beach Gem Energy)

Shi Shi is up in the PNW, hike through mossy rainforest—slugs, ferns, the whole deal—then boom, giant sea stacks and driftwood mountains. I went in fall, misty rain, jacket soaked, but the beach felt huge and empty. Tried (and failed) to start a fire because I forgot the permit rules—don’t do that.

Slipped on seaweed once, full wipeout, ate sand. No witnesses thank god. Starfish in pools were massive. Moody as hell, perfect for overthinking life while staring at waves.

3. Second Beach – La Push, Washington (Another PNW Hidden Gem I Love)

Short hike down to Second Beach—sea stacks everywhere like a movie set. Camped close once, woke up foggy, no cell service, just coffee and ocean noise. Dog went nuts chasing waves, got drenched, shook on me—thanks buddy.

Sunsets here slap hard. Less “secret” than some but still way quieter than touristy spots.

Wait no that’s the same one—oops. Anyway you get it.

4. El Matador State Beach – Malibu, California (Tiny But Epic Hidden Beach Gem)

El Matador is small, tucked under cliffs off the highway. Caves, arches, rocks to climb (I did in dumb shoes, almost ate it). Found a little spot to sit and read, wave came in and soaked everything—book ruined. Classic.

Super pretty though, go off-peak or you might share with photographers. Feels private even when not totally.

5. Bowman’s Beach – Sanibel Island, Florida (Shell Heaven Hidden Gem)

Bowman’s is chill Gulf side—shells literally everywhere. I stuffed pockets, found what I swear was a shark tooth, got stupid sunburnt forgetting to reapply. Walked forever, brain turned off, good.

No big buildings, just palms and quiet. Need more of this in my life instead of scrolling.

These hidden beach gems aren’t flawless trips—weather sucks sometimes, I pack wrong, get lost—but that’s why they’re real. Go find your own version. Bring water, bug spray, actual shoes, and maybe tell someone where tf you’re going.
